Voter Apathy, Late Arrival Of LASIEC Officials Mar Lagos Council Elections

 

There was late arrival of officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) in some polling units as voters turnout was low.

In some of the areas visited by our Correspondent, there were presence of policemen but the polling officers were yet to arrive as at 8:00am.

Although, in Agboyi/Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ward D polling unit 10, the polling officers were sighted arriving at about 8:20am with voting materials.

Speaking with the Presiding Officer, Mr Atobatele Sijuade, he gave the numbers of registered voters to be 84.

Sijuade explained that the accreditation and voting would occur concurrently, adding that as at arrival only one voter had come to vote.

Also, in Ward D polling unit 128, the Presiding Officer, Miss Bintu Ibrahim, said that the registered voter was 671 and that the exercise was follow COVID-19 protocols.

Ibrahim while addressing the few number of voters present, she advised them to follow the COVID-19 protocols by spacing.

 

Meanwhile, at around 9:30am, the Executive Chairman of Agboyi/Ketu LCDA and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Dele Osinowo, arrived to cast his vote.

Speaking with journalists after casting his vote, Osinowo, expressed satisfaction with the voting process, saying that there was tremendous advancement in the operation of the electoral body.

” So far, the election is going on smoothly. The logistic put in place by LASIEC is effective as they have distributed the election materials timely and effectively. All polling units agents are on ground to conduct the polls as credible and fair in adhere to the COVID-19 safety protocol. I want to say that LASIEC is doing a great job but the system is improving at every election and Lagos is up and doing.

” Truly, there is voter apathy but I believe there is still enough time for people to come out to vote. As I was coming to vote, I see people around and I believe before the end of the voting time they will come around. Maybe they are waiting for me and since I have voted, I am sure that will all come out here to vote.

” On security, we have done series of enlightenment and the police too have put a lot of logistics in place to ensure that security is not breached. I am sure the exercise will go on smoothly without any hindrance” he said.

However, as at the time of filing this report, the card reader for polling unit 128 did not function well as it was selective. Those whose cards were not readable by the card reader were given Incident Forms to cast their votes.

In Kosofe, the officials arrived at 9:30am in Polling unit 041 and 040. As at the time of filing this report, 16 registered voters had cast their vote out of 797 while 07 registered voters cast their vote out 105.
