Lagos LG Election: CPPILS Decries Voter Apathy, Calls For More Advocacy

The Coalition of Political Parties in Lagos state (CPPILS) has decried the voter apathy experienced in the state during last local government elections, urging Lagosians most especially the youths to show interest in politics.

CPPILS is a coalition of 13 registered political parties that participated in the election.

Speaking at a press conference organised by the Coalition on Thursday in Ikeja, the Chairman of the group, Akinola Obadia, said the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and other security agencies maintained neutrality and professionalism in their conduct during the election, commending political parties for playing by the guidelines of Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

Obadia said there is need for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in future elections to deploy adequate and functional card readers to the state electoral body, saying the noticeable challenges faced by electorate on the election day were not fault of the LASIEC.

” We, therefore, recommend a Tripartite Arrangement that will involve LASIEC, INEC and Donor agencies, political parties and civil society organisations, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and other identified stakeholders that will work together on this issue of voters as soon as possible, especially as we build up towards the 2023 general elections”.

” At this junction, we the active political parties in Lagos state, we must begin to sensitized the people on the need to take voting at elections seriously so that we can have better and reasonable turnout in the 2023 election”, said CPPILS.

The coalition scored LASIEC 90% on the conduct of election, advising the electoral body to do better in future elections to further prove to electorate that it is indeed an independent umpire.
