Just In: Hoodlums Attack Ijanikin Community, Block Lagos-Badagry Expressway

 

Hoodlums from the neighbouring Oto-Awori and Ijanikin communities since yesterday night (Wednesday) have been attacking the each other thereby causing social unrest in the area.

Oto-Awori and Ijanikin communities are located along Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Olorunda Local Council Development Area of Lagos state.

NewsBeatng reports that the hoodlums went further to block the popular Lagos-Badagry Expressway and making commuters to sleep over the only road connecting Nigeria to other West African countries.

According to eyewitnesses, the hoodlums made their way into a Shoe bags and textile market on the badagry road and destroyed their wares.

The eyewitnesses said that Oto-Awori and Ijanikin communities had been at logger head for almost three days over masquerades from one of the communities which allegedly assaulted one of the indiegenes.

They said that about a week ago, angry youths from the area had blocked same Ijanikin section of the road protesting death of an Okada rider in the area in the area who allegedly died in the hands of Policemen.

” The hoodlums wielded cutlass, dane gun and charms cordoned off the road and ordered commercial buses to turn back. Any vehicle that resisted them were attacked and their vehicles vandalised”, said the Eyewitnesses.

It was learnt that stranded commuters who attempted to seek refuge at the Ijanikin police station till the morning, were turned back by the station guard who said he was not authorized to open the gate for anybody.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Lagos Poilce Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in his tweet, said that the command was fully aware of the clash, adding that reinforcement had been despatched to complement the efforts of the officers of Ijanikin police station.

Hundeyin said ” We are fully aware of the ongoing trouble at Ijanikin area of Lagos State. While officers and men of Ijanikin Division are fully on ground, reinforcement has been despatched. Meanwhile, the road has since been reopened. We are closely monitoring the situation”.
