Uncertainty Trails Akeredolu’s Health Situation

…Crisis rocks Ondo Assembly over rumoured plans to impeach deputy governor

There are uncertainties over the health of Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, as the governor continues to be absent from his duty post.

The governor who recently returned from his annual leave abroad was last seen in the public on May 17 when he received the Ondo State Cocoa Council delegation in his office in Akure.

The governor was conspicuously missing at the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu on Monday and also missed the meeting of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, where they elected Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma as their Chairman.

An online newspaper, Sahara Reporters, had reported on Thursday that the governor was bedridden in Ibadan, Oyo State and was able to attend to any state functions, with “his hands and legs immovable.”

The paper further reported that the governor who is reported to be suffering from blood cancer (leukemia) was being scheduled to be flown abroad on Saturday.

While all of these were going on, news hit the social media on Friday about the rumoured death of the Owo-born politician. This was further fueled by a reported crisis in the House of Assembly over plans to impeach the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

A source close to the government in Ondo State who spoke to WesternPost but did not want his name mentioned for fear of victimization, said that many players within the state’s political circles were uncomfortable with Aiyedatiwa becoming governor if anything happened to Akeredolu.

It would be recalled that Ondo First Lady, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu had had a public spat with one of Akeredolu’s aide Bunmi Ademosun, warning her to stay away from her “sick” husband.

Betty Akeredolu had accused Ademosun of scheming to become the deputy governor in the eventuality of the governor’s death.

“I warn this woman to stay away from my husband, stop sneaking in concoction, according to her, they are from her pastors, her fake pastors to give my husband to drink. We rely on medical care, we rely on Western style of medical care and Aketi will get well.

“But what has triggered this very message is her recent nocturnal meetings to become the deputy governor of Ondo State. Look at you, what have you got upstairs to be the deputy governor of Ondo State? Peradventure, if anything happens to Aketi, Lucky (Aiyedatiwa) takes over,” she said in the leaked audio.

No official information has been released about Akeredolu’s whereabouts as he was yet again absent when the President met with APC governors at the Presidential Villa on Friday.
