FG Will Meet Labour Demands, Says Minister

The Federal Government said it is committed to resolving and implementing the agreements reached with the organised Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).

During a press conference, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeruika Onyejeocha addressed concerns brought out by Labour following a 16-point deal that the unions and the administration agreed in October is at risk.

The Minister said that the agreement is already being phased in and that plans have been finalised by the government to introduce around 11,500 compressed natural gas-powered vehicles in the upcoming months.

She also states that the N35,000 minimum salary is in effect at the moment.  Onyejeocha recognised the challenges faced by labourers and said that the government is always willing to have a conversation with the unions to address their issues. She stated that the nation cannot afford to have yet another state wide strike that would cause the economy to collapse.

Westernpost had reported that the organised NLC and the TUC, which comprise organised labour, had given the federal government a notice of a 14-day nationwide strike.

They accused the federal government of not carrying out the deal that was reached in October.
