Over 85million NINs Linked With SIMs- Pantami

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, has disclosed that over 85 million National Identification Numbers (NINs) to Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards on the National Identity Management System (NIMS).

Pantamin made this disclosure recently during a meeting with Mcebisi Jonas, MTN Group Chairman, and Ralph Mupita, President and CEO, at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Minister further discussed developmental strides in the telecoms sector in Nigeria, including the country’s progress in updating subscribers’ SIM registration records with National Identification Numbers (NINs).

As of 30th December 2021, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) had issued over seventy-one million (71m) NINs with over fourteen thousand (14,000) enrolment centres set up across the country.

NewsBeatng had reported that the federal government extended the deadline for the National Identification Number (NIN)-Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) data verification to the 31st of March, 2022.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) had also set up enrolment centres in over thirty-one (31) countries to cater for Nigerians in the Diaspora. The unprecedented growth in the National Identity Database to over 71 million unique NINs in such a short period, with about 3 to 4 SIMs linked to a NIN, reflects the concerted effort of the Federal Government, the Nigerian populace and legal residents.

In April 4th of 2022, the federal government directed telecommunication companies to bar outgoing calls on all unlinked lines.

Unlinked lines are subscriber identity module (SIM) cards not yet linked with the National Identification Number (NIN).
