Just In: Court Nullifies Osun Local Govt Polls, Sacks 69 Council Chairmen, Councillors

A Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State capital, has sacked the 69 council chairmen sworn in by the outgoing State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, after nullifying the polls conducted the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC).

It was reported that the court ruled that the election was held by the electoral umpire in contravention to Sections 29 & 32 of the Electoral Act, 2022 and that it is illegal.

In a judgement delivered on Friday, Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel declared that the council chairmen, who were sworn in by Oyetola, came into office through illegality and that they should leave office.

The judgement was delivered on a suit brought before it by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asking that the court stops OSIEC from going ahead with the planned polls.
