Lagos Safety Commission Moves To Avert Building Collapse



The Lagos State government has initiated moves to avert building collapse in the state.

This was made known by the Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, LSC,  Lanre Mojola, during a one day training on Wednesday.

Mojola said that the training was important to avert future occurrence of building collapse in Lagos State.

He said “It is all about making the workers in the iron and steel sector to imbibe safety in their work place.

” The essence of this training is about professionals in the iron and steel sector not to cut corners during production of iron and steel materials and appropriate iron and steel be used during building construction so as to avert collapse building.

“Safety in all ramification is sacrosanct that is why the Lagos state Government is committed in the training and retraining of officials in the iron and steel sector .

” This one day programme on Standard Working Procedures in the Iron and Steel industry in Lagos State was organised to reduce the occurrence of accidents that lead to injuries, disabilities, loss of lives.

” It is also to train and retrain ourselves on best safe practices in the workplace. This will promote the well-being of workers and ensure that they return home safely to their families and loved ones. “

Mojola, who was represented by Director, administration and human resources in Lagos Safety Commission, Taiwo Fesomu, said that the training was important and manufacturers in the iron and steel industry must comply to the rules guiding the industry .

Also at the event, a Safety expert, Adeyinka Adebiyi advised companies in the iron and steel sector not to use substandard materials during the production of iron and steel materials.

He said “ Most of this building collapse are due to substandard material and lack of knowledge on the metal to use , iron rod.

” For every structure there is a type of rod to use and it must sufficient to use, they must not cut corners, because cutting corners are the reason why we have collapse building. The manufacturers must also use the standard material to manufacture their products

“There are also a lot of accidents in the iron and steel sector that is why this training is very important hence Lagos Safety commission determined that those in that sector be trained.”

Adebiyi also advised those in the iron and steel sector to identify the hazard in the sector and remove it before embarking on any project.

He also told to use appropriate protective equipment to protect themselves so that when accidents occur it won’t affect them.
