Osun Assembly Elects 38-Year Old Egbedun As Speaker

 

Osun State House of Assembly on Tuesday elected Adewale Egbedun, as the Speaker of the 8th Assembly.

Egbedun, a 38-year old Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member and a first time lawmaker, representing Odo-Otin Constituency, was nominated by Abiola Ibrahim from Irewole/Isokan while Areoye Ebenezer from Atakumosa East/West seconded the motion.

Also, Akinyode Oyewusi, the lawmaker representing Ife North State Constituency was equally elected as Deputy Speaker after his nomination by Oderinwale Akinyemi, the lawmaker representing Ayedire State Constituency and seconded by Abolarin Ajibade, lawmaker from Ifedayo State Constituency.

The inaugural sitting of the 8th Assembly was presided over by the Clerk of the House, Simeon Amusan.

The inauguration followed the expiration of the 7th Assembly led by the immediate past Speaker, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye.

The inaugural plenary was attended by the Governor Ademola Adeleke, his Deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi and top government functionaries.

In his address, Adeleke assured that he would spare no effort at ensuring cordial relationships among all arms of government.

The governor sought for the support of the new Assembly in building a great Osun.

His words: “I seek the support of this new Assembly for the continuation of our good governance revolution. As critical stakeholders, you are coming in at a time your backup is most required.

“We hope to fast track the realisation of our five-point agenda. That goal is only achievable with a supportive Assembly. The exercise of your power for the people and public good my solicitation.

“This 8th Assembly has a golden opportunity to be a strong partner with us in the task of building a new Osun state. “We share common views and visions on how to make Osun great. We are mostly products of the same movement. Our movement is focused on defeating poverty, expanding development, building prosperity and growing the Osun economy.”

Addressing the 8th Assembly, the new Speaker assured of a House leadership that is consultative, responsive and transparent in the conduct of legislative business.

While speaking on the legislative agenda under his leadership, Egbedun sought for the collaboration of his colleagues.

He highlighted the core areas the 8th Assembly will work on as legislation for workers’ welfare, financial inclusiveness, legislation for infrastructural development, social sector, health agenda and new age legislation.

Egbedun said: “I thank you my colleagues for this recognition of my person as capable enough to lead the 8th Assembly.

“In the same breath, I call on fellow contestants to join hands with me in leading a truly new age House. I am elated to affirm that no one is defeated and neither is anyone victorious. We are all winners and that reality will reflect in a new era of engagement with all, irrespective of affiliations.

“To the lone opposition member of this House, be assured that you are not alone. Under our leadership, you will enjoy all due privileges as I am of the strong view that this House is for all persuasions without discrimination of whatever sorts.

“I assure His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Osun State, of our unalloyed loyalty and support in our common quest to deliver on good governance in Osun State. The Governor will find in us a legislature that is transparent, honest and supportive in the discharge of our legislative mandate.”

It would be recalled that the PDP won 25 out of the 26 state constituencies during the last general election.
