The Sector commander, Federal Road Safety Corp, Kwara state,Corp Commander Frederick Ogidan, says the command arrested 24,618 traffic offenders in nine months.
Ogidan also disclosed that 97 crashes were recorded between January and September 2023.
He made this disclosure in an exclusive interview with WesternPost on Monday.
Kwara has 12 Unit Commands and 2 Area Commands.
Ogidan said road traffic rules compliance was on the high side, adding that the agency’s enforcement was high.
The FRSC boss added that motorists who were not ready to comply were arrested and prosecuted.
“In Kwara, between January and September, 24,618 offenders were arrested. That is to show you the level of our enforcement.
” The crashes are not much, between January and September we recorded 97 road crashes” he said.
“Like I said earlier we recorded the low crashes because we do serious enforcement, we do serious public enlightenment on radio, television. We visit motor parks, we do what we called ‘early morning cry’. We warn drivers, passengers to be careful while moving on the road. So, with these efforts we were able to reduce accidents on the road. Our men are on the roads to calm drivers who speed because excessive speeding is the major cause of road traffic crashes.
” On ember months, our message to the drivers is that they must exercise caution on the roads, by reducing their speed. They should not embark on overloading of their vehicles, they should not carry excessive passengers, because it’s ember months. They should not be in hurry to make too much money by running more than the number of trips and they should avoid night travelling. If they do these definitely they will celebrate well”, said Ogidan.
On driver’s license process, Ogidan said the process is not difficult.
He added ” It has been so simplify that even from the comfort of your room, you can renew your driver’s license. Those who might say it’s difficult for them are those who don’t have at all and they think it is business as usual.
” As first applicant, who thinks you will go to license office and collect driver’s license without passing through FRSC accredited driving schools, must be joking.
” You will have to be trained and be given a certificate of driving school after 26 sessions of one hour each, then proceed for Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) test, where the applicants will be tested to see that they are fit to drive, give learners permit, then FRSC office will then give the driver’s license,an untrained driver is crash waiting to happen”, said the FRSC Boss.
He noted that there is a perfect synergy between the command and other sisters’ agencies.
The FRSC boss enjoined drivers to maintain minimum speed, adding that the maximum speed is 100 kilometers for cars, while buses should not go up to 100 kilometers.
He advised trailers and articulated vehicles transporting goods not to carry passengers, adding that when accident occurs loads may kill them.
